“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So goes the phrase attributed to Benjamin Franklin. Consider the meaning behind this worthy idiom when approaching the correct method of filling syringes with your dispensing fluid. Whether performing this critical function on a large automated scale or manually for a single benchtop dispenser, the quality and consistency of your dispensing will be dependent on this step. The SmartDispenser® dispensing system contains the essential data to create precise programming parameters that will yield repeatable dispensing with 3, 5, 10 and 30cc syringes. To take full advantage of this capability, start with properly filled syringes.
To begin, only use Fishman’s Genius® components. The dimensions for our patented PosiLok™ pistons and syringes have been programmed into the software of the SmartDispenser®. The design of the PosiLok™ piston allows for an increased interference fit with the I.D. of the syringe to prevent pressure loss. The industrial thread interlocks with the piston hub on your LDS™ dispense gun and the thick wall allows you to drive your fluid through the dispense tip without a loss in pressure. The precise dimensions and material composition of our syringes work together with the PosiLok™ pistons to provide consistent, repeatable fluid dispensing.
Always fully insert the PosiLok™ piston into the syringe regardless of which particular method of filling is to be used. Utilizing either a straight or 90 degree luer-to-luer adapter, the fluid should enter through the “nose” or the luer lock dispense orifice of the syringe. Filling your syringes in this method will keep the fluid in front of the PosiLok™ piston. The fluid should not breach the front seal of the piston. Eliminating – or at the least, minimizing – air voids is also instrumental in taking full advantage of the dispensing capability afforded by the SmartDispenser®. When pockets of air reach and pass through the dispense tip the result is an incomplete dispense.
Fishman® offers a selection of syringe filling systems keyed to your fluid viscosity and production volume. A number of instructional videos have been created and posted displaying the different methods of filling syringes with an assortment of fluids. Taking a few minutes to review one or more of these will illustrate this process. Once a preferred systematic approach has been established, implementing a standard formalized procedure for your production team will reap rewards by creating a clean work environment and eliminate fluid waste, rework and rejected parts.
