A large medical device manufacturer needed to minimize human error and provide documented verification that the correct assembly fluid was selected by its operators and used in production runs with its SmartDispenser^® fluid dispensing system. We did for them what we have done for many of our customers, we created a SmartApp^™ that would add a specific capability, and by doing so add to the intelligence of their SmartDispenser^®.

The app, which is called the Bar Code Scanning Assembly Fluid Verification SmartApp, installs manufacturing data empowering the SmartDispenser^® to verify correct choices and stop incorrect ones while documenting both events. This not only enables the medical device manufacturer to meet regulatory requirements, but it also helps it to greatly reduce human error, as well as the risk of manufacturing defects occurring if the wrong fluid is chosen.

How the Bar Code Scanning Assembly Fluid Verification SmartApp works-

• The operator scans the bar code on the syringe reservoir full of assembly fluid.
• The SmartDispenser^® finds the machine name and associated assembly fluid part numbers in the database.
• If the assembly fluid part numbers match, the operator is allowed to proceed with the production run.
• If the assembly fluid part numbers do not match, the SmartDispenser sends an alert stating “Wrong assembly fluid selected,” which can only be cleared with the administrator’s password.

Automatically records device history every 24 hours.

The Assembly Fluid Verification SmartApp also automatically creates a device history record every 24 hours, providing manufacturers with excellent data for purposes such as quality assurance and cost accounting documentation, and operator performance reviews.
All this data is automatically recorded, collected and entered into an Excel CSV file, and can be automatically emailed from the SmartDispenser^® to the Production Manager on a daily basis as well.
